“In the mid 70s, the Indian government saw Ladakh aka Little Tibet as a source of income from tourism. Suddenly Ladakh was exposed to the outside world through a new connecting road over which came truck after fuel-burning truck bearing cheap food and goods, undermining the local economy. The area became overwhelmed with the imagery of Western consumerism, which made its own culture seem pitiful, backward and undesirable. Affluence undermines community. Extreme affluence undermines extremely. Economic globalization has led to a massive expansion in the scale and power of big corporations. It has exacerbated every problem that we face: fundamentalism and ethnic conflict; climate chaos and species extinction; financial instability and unemployment. But all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding re-regulation of trade and finance. And they’re starting to build an alternative future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new model – local economics. If we sit and talk about it, they will steal it all away.”
